Ministry of National Defense: Japan must be cautious in its words and deeds on the Taiwan issue and the Diaoyu Islands issue

In the afternoon, the Ministry of National Defense held a regular press conference. Tan Kefei, Deputy Director of the Ministry of National Defense Information Bureau and spokesperson of the Ministry of National Defense, answered questions from reporters.

Reporter: According to reports, Japan’s 2021 edition of the “Defense White Paper” drafted for the first time the content that “the stability of the situation in Taiwan is critical to Japan’s security and the stability of the international community”, and that China’s military trends have raised concerns. The Japanese white paper also accused the Chinese coast guard boat of “violating international law” for its activities around the Diaoyu Islands. Does the Ministry of Defense have any comment on this?

Tan Kefei:┬áIn recent times, Japan has ignored the basic norms of international relations, has grossly interfered in China’s internal affairs, deliberately exaggerated the so-called “Chinese military threat,” and groundlessly accused China of legitimate maritime activities. The Chinese side has expressed firm opposition to this and has already proposed to the Japanese side. Make solemn representations.

The Taiwan issue is China’s internal affair, and no foreign interference is allowed. Regarding this issue, the Japanese side should do best to keep in mind the grave disasters it launched in the war of aggression against China that brought the Chinese people, including Taiwan compatriots, to the correct treatment and profound reflection on the history of Japanese militarism aggression. We urge the Japanese side to learn from history, look into the future, be cautious in words and deeds, advance and retreat knowing what to do on issues related to China’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and work with China to push bilateral relations the right track.

The Diaoyu Island and its affiliated islands are China’s inherent territory, which has a solid historical and legal basis. The Japanese imperialists illegally stole the Diaoyu Islands in the Sino-Japanese War in 1895. After the end of World War II in 1945, the sovereignty of the Diaoyu Islands was returned to China under international legal documents such as the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation. The Chinese official ship’s patrol enforcement in the waters of the Diaoyu Islands is an exercise of national sovereignty under the law.

International law is the public weapon of the world, and any country cannot shake it out of its private message. Japan’s false accusation of China’s activities as “violating international law” precisely exposed its blatant contempt for international law. Those who hold this view should revisit the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation. China will, as always, firmly defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity and firmly support the victory of the world anti-fascist war and the international order based on international law.
